Our History

Raising The Standard Since 2002

In 2002, a small produce retailer named “Fine Fruit” opened its doors within James Street Markets in Fortitude Valley. Fine Fruit was a new, unique idea brought about by the shared passion, labour, and knowledge of Darren Frame and Mitch Love. The two founders understood the demand Brisbane shoppers had for high-quality produce, and saw a gap in the market ripe with opportunity.

It was this demand–demand of quality and demand of themselves– that carried the Fine Fruit business forward, as Darren and Mitch set new, rigorous expectations in the local food scene; The impact of which has produced long-lasting effects that continue today.

Not Your Average Grocery Store

Once they achieved their goal to provide the customers of James St with the finest gourmet produce, Darren and Mitch set their eyes on expansion. In 2006, they opened a new Fine Fruit store in Ferry Road Markets in Southport, and with it four new stores: Quench Juice Bar, Prime Specialty Meats, Sevilo Delicatessen, and Flour Bakery. Finally, after years of success through the same unwavering demand for quality, The Standard Market Company was realised in 2013 along with the opening of the Gasworks store in Newstead.

Today, The Standard Market Company is a family run business, still owned and operated by Darren, along with his wife Nikki and son Chris. Although two decades have passed since the inception of Fine Fruit on James, our mission remains the same: to set the standard in food retail by providing customers with the highest quality gourmet foods and ingredients along with knowledgeable and friendly customer service. We are the standard you can trust
