WE’VE GROWN ORGANICALLY

From our opening day in 2002 as the “Fine Fruit” retailers within the James Street Markets in Fortitude Valley, our founders Darren Frame and Mitch Love made an immediate impact on the local food scene. Fine Fruit was a unique concept made successful through a combined knowledge of the best suppliers, the seasonal produce opportunities and an eye for the sort of foods that were not being offered by the generic chain retailers.

Having achieved their goal of supplying the highest quality gourmet fruit and vegetables to their customers, Mitch and Darren began to grow their retail food business by opening the Quench Juice, Snack and Gelati Bar in 2006 and then in 2007, also purchased a butcher store, calling it Prime Specialty Meats. Later, responding to a need for gourmet delicatessen fare, we expanded the chilled section of our market to encompass specialist deli lines from international and local producers. Our first market became an institution in the Fortitude Valley area and the Company’s reputation went from strength to strength.

FROM THE VALLEY TO THE COAST

Meanwhile, in November 2006, Darren and Mitch took our unique focus on fine produce to the Ferry Road Markets at Southport on the Gold Coast. There, our success continued but this time with five stores: Fine Fruit, Prime Specialty Meats, Quench Juice Bar, Sevilo Delicatessen and Flour Bakery. We were a hit with the Gold Coast locals and we realized we really had something unique: A place where cooks, lovers of fresh food and people looking for tastes and inspiration or just instant culinary gratification could all shop.

THE BIRTH OF A NEW STANDARD

On the strength of our James Street and Ferry Road market success and 10 years in business, the scene was set for a new combined market stall concept to open: A new standard for for fresh produce, ingredients and food ideas. During the company wide re-branding process and opening our third market, The Standard Market Company was born, opening its first premises at Gasworks Plaza- a new urban community in Newstead, Brisbane, in September 2013. It opened as a combined market with five departments under the new branding : FRUIT, MEATS, BREADS, DELI and QUENCH (juice). The new format meant that The Standard Market Company was more than a grocer, a butcher, a deli or a baker. It was all those things combined under a guiding philosophy of quality before quantity, where knowledge and excellent sourcing delivers regular innovation, surprise and food inspiration. That’s the Standard Market Company philosophy: to set a new standard when it comes to food.
